Did you see my post where I made fabric twine? Well, I have a project today for it!
I’m making fabric twine coasters!!
This is a very easy project, I’ve made it by hand sewing and using a sewing machine, and they turned out great both ways!
My hand sewing skills are not the greatest, which is why I need to keep practicing them.
This project is small enough to not make learning to hand sew get boring or overwhelming.
The end result did end up slightly shabby chic-ish, but I actually don’t mind how they look.
After all, it’s just some fun coasters!
I will be sharing how to machine sew and hand sew these though.
These are my favorite coasters I have made so far because:
1) when my daughter throws them across the room, it is unlikely to clunk loudly on the floor or break anything
2) The fabric is sturdy enough to provide some grip on an smooth armchair and/or table
Hand Sewing Tips
Admittedly, I don’t know much about hand sewing. Everything I have learned about it has been from Abby Cox and Bernadette Banner.
As the coasters may hold some heat, you may want to use 100% cotton thread. I have used all purpose thread (poly) with no issues.
Though I didn’t experience too many problems with sewing through the twine, having a thimble really helped push the needle through when I did face some resistance.
Honestly, if you are thinking about hand sewing, a thimble will save your fingers.
Alternative methods of making these coasters
Technically, you should be able to use fabric glue for this project, though I have never tried it and am unsure how the final product would turn out.
Items needed for this project
- Fabric Twine
For hand sewing
- Hand sewing needle
- Thread
- Thimble
Machine sewing
- Sewing Machine
- Thread
- Denim/Upholstery needle
How to Hand Sew Fabric Twine Coasters
Take approximately 55 inches of twine. This will make a coaster around 3.5 inches wide.
Start wrapping the fabric on to itself like the picture below (approximately 1 inch folded down).
Making sure you catch both parts of the twine, stitch into place.
Continue to add more twine and stitch into place.
When at the end, whip stitch into place.
Marvel at the coaster you just hand sewed!
How to Machine Sew Fabric Twine Coasters
Take approximately 80 inches of twine. This will make a coaster around 5 inches wide.
Fold the fabric as shown (approximately 1 inch)
Set your machine to a wide zig-zag stitch and longest length
Make sure your loose twine is on the right hand side
Start zig-zag stitching, slowly turning your coaster to be circular
When coming to the end of your coaster, backstitch to secure your stitching in place.
*Note: Starting off can be tricky, but the wider your coaster gets, the easier it gets to sew!
